Following the development of VAPRO training programmes for the new operators at Valero in Aruba, a course is now being developed for both the Area Operators and Board Operators at the Valero Refinery in Aruba. The combination of the two will lead to the job of Refinery Operator (VAPRO –B-C level). The course material consists of a mix of VAPRO educational tools, Valero teaching material, Field Walks, Learning Assignments and Maintenance Training. The average age of Valero staff is high, and training young operators is a must, in order to safeguard continuity and quality. All participants on the course will receive fully customised VAPRO training. The Valero staff are very enthusiastic about this approach. The English versions of the process technology and process control CD-ROMs are very successful with the operators. The field walks are quite hard work; at high temperatures, and wearing blue overalls, helmets, and protective glasses and shoes. During the field walk, hearing protection must be worn. Sometimes, you have to climb vertical ladders in order to reach inspection holes, for example. Safety meetings are held every week and all staff are obliged to attend them. This is often done because of a recent accident. Levels of motivation are high and working here is a continual adventure. |
